Finishing Basement with Drywall

On this project, we are finishing one half of a basement to accommodate friends and family over for gatherings. First we will demo out the drywall-ceiling and begin with the framing. The previous ceiling frame was spaced too far apart to secure the new drywall properly so we added additional furring strips. Proper spacing helps prevent sag in the ceiling.

To maximize the space we anchor two by threes flat on the foundation wall. We also install insulation to provide a barrier for temperature. Unlike the foundation walls, on the partition wall we utilize two by four dimensional lumber to give plenty of room for mechanicals to be ran. Also, on the partition wall, we utilize a pressure-treated piece of lumber as the bottom plate that lays on the bare concrete floor. Once the walls and ceiling are all properly framed and the electrical ran we will begin to hang the drywall.

We begin with the ceilings and then work our way to the walls. For the ceilings, we use a drywall lift which makes for a much easier and safer job.

And, once the drywall is up, we begin to apply the joint-tape and joint-compound. The first coat is done with a light-weight joint compound for less shrinkage. And then, when it has dried, a day later or so we apply the second coat with a tinted light-weight joint compound to make it easier to distinguish visually the fresh coat from the previous coat. After two or three coats the drywall is ready for paint.

And we are done finishing the basement!

“We have had two very good experiences with Miguel and his team. Message me if you would like more details of the work, but we found him to be very timely, honest, and sincerely appreciated that he made efforts to save us money by proposing alternate solutions, even if it meant less for him. That is the mark of someone you want to hire and trust.”
