Hi Everybody! It’s that time of year again when we begin to actually publish some of the work we have been doing. Stay tuned to see the updates! First one up is this new concrete sidewalk! Here we go…

On this project we are replacing a preexisting sidewalk. Fortunately for us, water lines below were also recently replaced giving us a head-start on the demolition. So, first we began by breaking up and removing the remainder of the old sidewalk. Second, we set up batter-boards and string-lines to mark out the location of our new concrete sidewalk.

Then we began to dig for our new wider sidewalk. And we gave ourselves just enough room for our 2 x 4 forms to fit on both sides of the soon to be poured concrete. Also, we dig just enough for a layer of gravel to be laid before the concrete pour.

Setting the Forms

After the gravel is in place, we set our forms and proceed to compact the gravel. Compacting the gravel as it is being laid is also a good idea.

So, now it is time for the real fun to begin!

Finishing the Concrete

Wow! That was quick! We didn’t even get a chance to take a picture of the actual pour as it was happening. Sorry! It was overlooked in all the hustle and bustle. Anyhow, we are glad that is over!

“The name is true! Honest people. Quality work. I highly recommend!”

Unfortunately, we did not have a pump truck, one that could extend its articulating boom out to the formed area so this job was destined to be a wheel barrel pour.

We started on the far end just off the edge of the house. We’d fill one section with enough concrete mix to reach grade and then level it off with a 2 x 4 making sure to fill any voids or low spots. Afterwards, we’d smooth it over with wood and/ or magnesium floats. Later we gave it a finer smoothing with stainless steel trowels. And finally, we added a bit of texture with a broom giving it the so-called broom finish.
