Paver Patio Regrade Slope Away

Paver Patio Regrade

Here we have a paver patio regrade. The main purpose of this project is to correct a standing water issue at the foundation. Rain-water is inconveniently running to the foundation and then seeping far into the basement. If not corrected in timely fashion, this can cause grave damage.

First we added material to raise the earth a bit. And then we installed pavers over a paver base bed. The next step was to add a thin layer of sand on top of the pavers sweeping back and forth to fill the joints. Followed by, tamping the pavers beneath the sand to give them a nice tightening.

Finally, we sweep the excess sand from the surface of the patio and voila! We like to take the extra steps to get our patrons’ lawns back in shape after construction. So some grass seed and a little hay we lay.

Before long we’ve got grass! And look, the AC unit and grill are back in their places dry as ever.

Recap Paver Patio Regrade

In recap, the problem at this home was that the backyard was improperly graded. The ground sloped down toward the foundation instead of down away from the foundation and toward the perimeter of the lot. Therefore, during rainfall, especially heavy rainfall, the basement would collect a lot of water.

So that is where we came in. First we added black dirt to raise the ground level at the foundation enough to slope the earth down away from the home. All the while making sure to correctly compact the added dirt. Then we added a layer of paver base and also compacted that appropriately. That was followed by a layer of paver sand.

After making sure to level the paver sand or set it to the new sloped grade we began laying the pavers one by one. The final steps were tamping down the pavers locking them into place beneath a layer of sand and sweeping up the excess sand afterwards.
